    Baroque [teatron] (English)
A European style of architecture and decoration which developed in the 17th century in Italy from the late Renaissance and Manerist forms, and culminated in the public buildings of southern Germany and Austria in the early 18th century. It is characterised by interpenetration of oval spaces, curved surfaces and conspicuous use of decoration, sculpture and colour. Its late phase is called Rococo. The stile prevailing in the restrained architectural climate of England and France can be called Baroque classicism. (English)
