Introduction for readers

These Help pages are meant for end users, people wanting to explore and read the information in Canonbase. Content devellopers have an extended version of Help pages when they log-in.

CanonBase is a multi-lingual, colaborative database about the history of technical theatre. The result is a webpage that has multiple interconnected and clickable items. Moreover, it contains different visualisations, like maps, tree structures or timelines, that will pop-up if there is relevant information to show.

Language

Canonbase uses English as the root language. In theory every item should exist at least in English.

Language setting

When you go to the website, it should automatically switch to the language in your browser or to English if your language is (not yet) supported. The interface, the properties and the most important items will be in that language. But you will also see the other languages.

If you prefer another language as basic language, you can always adapt the setting, clicking the icon top-left of the page.

Names of persons, theatres, sources, etc. are not translated, so you will find them in English in the original language. Names of geographical entities are only translated if there is a generally acknowledged translation.

Finding your way

There are many different ways to find information in the Canonbase. The structure is build so that everything is connected to everything. But there are different entries that help finding what you are looking for. Read more about this in the Finding your way pages.

Understanding the structure

To understand better the way we gather and display the information, it is helpful to have an idea about the technical structure behind the Canon-base system. In the Structure page, we describe in short the concepts and the terminology used without (we hope) to going to much into technical details.
