Built 1872 as a private theatre. 1911 damaged by a fire. Subsequently rebuilt and extended. Re-opened 1912. From 1933, operated as a municipal theatre. 1954-1992 operated by the district of Döbeln, renamed Kreistheater. Since 1993, one of the homes of the Mittelsächsisches Theater drama and opera companies (together with Stadttheater Freiberg). 2007 extension by an annex with a studio theatre, dressing rooms and workshops. 2011-2012 interior renovation and modernization. 2013 damaged by a flood of the river Freiberger Mulde.
