Built 1905-1909 by Friedrich Lehmann after designs by Martin Dülfer. Opened 29 Sep 1909 as Stadttheater with Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Severely damaged by bombs on 25 Mar 1945, with only the foyer remaining intact. Rebuilt 1949-1950 to modern interior designs, stage tower rebuilt to simplified designs without the art-nouveau gable. 1972 addition of a foyer. 1985-1987 rebuildings. Used for opera, ballet and drama performances by the resident companies. (English)
