+Antichissimo teatro storico, e- retto nel quinquennio 1652-56 dal- 1; architetto Ferdinando Tacca e completamente ricostruito nel 1755 dall’architetto Giulio Mannaioni. Ha subito successivi restauri nel 1856 e in epoca più recente che ne hanno modificato notevolmente lo aspetto originario. Un ultimo generale restauro è stato pertanto a termine dall’architetto Luigi Caliterna dopo l’alluvione del novembre 1966. (Italian)

The building contains two halls: Sala Grande, also known as Teatro Massimo (1500 seats), and Saloncino Paolo Poli, a former ballroom used as a concert hall since 1804 (400 seats). 1855-1857 interior rebuilding. Currently used for drama performances throughout the year, and for opera performances during the annual Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival. (English)

Note

Antichissimo teatro storico, e- retto nel quinquennio 1652-56 dal- 1; architetto Ferdinando Tacca e completamente ricostruito nel 1755 dall’architetto Giulio Mannaioni. Ha subito successivi restauri nel 1856 e in epoca più recente che ne hanno modificato notevolmente lo aspetto originario. Un ultimo generale restauro è stato pertanto a termine dall’architetto Luigi Caliterna dopo l’alluvione del novembre 1966. (Italian)

The Pergola, Florence Theatre is still basically intact, complete with its equipment for raising the floor to serve as a ballroom and it is the first to be built with superposed tiers of boxes rather than raked semi-circular seating in the Roman fashion. It is considered to be the oldest in Italy, having occupied the same site for more than 350 years. (English)
