Antichissimo teatro storico, e- retto nel quinquennio 1652-56 dal- 1; architetto Ferdinando Tacca e completamente ricostruito nel 1755 dall’architetto Giulio Mannaioni. Ha subito successivi restauri nel 1856 e in epoca più recente che ne hanno modificato notevolmente lo aspetto originario. Un ultimo generale restauro è stato pertanto a termine dall’archi­tetto Luigi Caliterna dopo l’allu­vione del novembre 1966. (Italian)

Built by Ferdinando Tacca. Opened 7 Feb 1656 with Jacopo Melani's opera Il potestà di Colognole. The building contains two halls: Sala Grande, also known as Teatro Massimo (1500 seats), and Saloncino Paolo Poli, a former ballroom used as a concert hall since 1804 (400 seats). 1855-1857 interior rebuilding. Currently used for drama performances throughout the year, and for opera performances during the annual Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival. (English)

The Pergola, Florence Theatre is still basically intact, complete with its equipment for raising the floor to serve as a ballroom and it is the first to be built with superposed tiers of boxes rather than raked semi-circular seating in the Roman fashion. It is considered to be the oldest in Italy, having occupied the same site for more than 350 years. (English)
