Built 1899 by G. E. Bond. Opened 31 July 1899 as Theatre Royal. 2840 seats. Severely damaged by fire soon after. Subsequently rebuilt by G. E. Bond and re-opened in 1900 with 1500 seats. 1938 rebuilding by Andrew Mather. Re-opened as Royal Hippodrome Theatre. 1940 renamed Theatre Royal. Closed 1953 and converted into a furniture store. Demolished in 2009 in favour of flats, with only the façade and foyer remaining. (English)
