Built 1860-1862 by Charles Couteau for the casino manager Édouard Bénazet. Also known as Stadttheater or Kleines Theater (to distinguish it from the Kurhaus concert halls). Opened 6 Aug 1862 with Conradin Kreutzer's opera Das Nachtlager in Granada, performed by the Karlsruhe court theatre. Since 1918, home to a permanent municipal theatre ensemble. 1954 renovations, 1960 of stagehouse rebuilding, 1980-1981 exterior renovations, 1989-1992 major interior renovations. (English)
