Built 1882 by Louis Sauvageot on the site of a previous theatre buildling (opened 1794, destroyed by a fire on 25 Apr 1876). Opened 30 Sep 1882 with Giacomo Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots. Severely damaged by a fire on 9 Juned 1940, completely destroyed by bombs on 30 and 31 May 1944. A new Théâtre des Arts was later built on another site. (English)

Burnt at 7 p.m., before the admission of the public. The fire was most likely due to the flaring up of a gas light. Nothing saved. Several houses were also destroyed. Some of the actors were dressing, and of these eight were killed and twelve injured. (English)
