E’ un elegante capace teatro moderno, sede deU’omonimo Ente Autonomo che vi organizza regolari stagioni liriche e concertistiche e gli spettacoli più importanti del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. Sorto nel quadriennio 1859 - 62 come teatro diurno (architetto Telemaco Bonajuti), era stato trasformato in teatro coperto nel 1882 e sommariamente rinnovato nel triennio 1930-33. Nel 1944 ha avuto il palcoscenico comletamente devastato dai bombardamenti. Riattivato nell’im- mediato dopoguerra, ha continuato a funzionare fino al 1957. Nel 1961 è stato riaperto dopo una completa ricostruzione della sala e degli atrii a cura degli architetti Alessandro Giuntoli e Corinna Bartolini. Ha subito un nuovo restauro dopo i danni dell’alluvione del novembre 1966 ed ha una capienza di 2000 posti circa. (Italian)
