Built 1667 as Nobile Teatro di Spoleto. 1749 rebuilding. Re-opened 1749 as Nuovo Teatro. 1819 major rebuilding. Closed 1854 when the new Teatro Nuovo was opened. 1877-1880 rebuilding and renovations by Giovanni Montiroli, ceiling painting by Domenico Bruschi. Re-opened 1880 as Teatro Caio Melisso in honour of the Roman writer, Gaius Maecenas Melissus (1st century AD). 350 seats. Used for opera performances by the summer arts and theatre festival Festival dei Due Mondi. (English)

Note
Antico teatro risalente alla metà del seicento. Al’interno è stato pe­rò completamente rinnovato nel 1860 dall’arch. Montiroli. Nel 1958 era ridotto a cinemato­grafo quando l’architetto Roberto De Luca lo ha completamente re­staurato per farne la sede di con­certi, opere da camera e spettacoli di prosa nell’ambito del Festival dei due Mondi. Appartiene alComune ed ha una capienza di 800 posti circa. (Italian)
