Built 1874-1880 by R. I. Karvovsky as municipal theatre (Gorodskoy Teatr). Opened 1879. 1939 renamed Permsky oblastnoy teatr operi i baleta (Perm Regional Opera and Ballet Theatre). 1957-1959 major rebuilding by S. Andreyev and D. Ya. Kirzhakov. Re-opened 4 June 1959. 1965 renamed in honour of the Russian composer, Piotr Ilyich Chaikovsky (1840-1893). (English)
