Built 1872-1903. Named in honour of the Mexican president and national hero, Benito Juárez (1806-1872). Opened 27 Oct 1903 with Verdi's Aida, performed by the Italian opera company of Ettore Diog. Used for opera, drama, and variety performances, as a cinema, for carnival balls and for political functions. Since 1972 main performance venue of the Festival Internacional Cervantino. (English)
