Built 1871 for Francis Joseph Springer. Opened 21 Feb 1871. Originally used for classical and popular drama, vaudeville and dance performances, and concerts. 1901 rebuildings. 1929 converted into a cinema. 1964 plans to demolish the theatre. Subsequently renovation funded by a citizens' group. Re-opened 1965. 1997-1999 major renovation by Hecht, Burdeshaw, Johnson, Kidd, and Clark (project architect: Ed Burdeshaw), including the installation of an orchestra pit. The complex includes a main theatre (Emily Woodruff Hall, 700 seats), a studio theatre (Foley Hall) and a Learning Center. Oficcially designated as State Theatre of Georgia. Home to the resident Springer Theatre Company. Mainly used for drama performances. (English)
