Built 1856-1857 by Nicolò Bruno. Opened 19 Sep 1857 with Carlo Pedrotti's opera Tutti in maschera. Named in honour of the Italian actor and political activist, Gustavo Modena (1803-1861). 1920-1922 restorations by Raffaele Bruno. From 1936 until 1979 mainly used as a cinema. 1983 closed due to safety concerns. 1996-1997 rebuilding. Re-opened 31 Oct 1997 as home to the Teatro dell'Archivolto company. From 2018 operated as part of the Teatro Nazionale di Genova. 498 seats. (English)
