Built 1881 by C. J. Phipps for Richard D'Oyly Carte. Opened 10 Oct 1881. It was the first public building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity. 1929 rebuilding. Severely damaged by fire in 1990. Subsequently rebuilt, re-opened 1993. Ca. 1150 seats. (English)
