Said of cut stone having strongly emphasised recessed joints and smooth or roughly textured block faces; used to create an appearance of impregnability in banks, palaces, court houses etc. The border of each block may be rebated, chamfered, or bevelled on all four sides, at to and bottom only, or on two adjacent sides; the face of the brick may be flat, pinched, or diamond-point, and if smooth may be hand- or machine-tooled.
