The theatre was designed by Fellner and Helmer, the renowned architect company from Vienna, while the construction was supervised by Lipot Havel. Looked at from the front, the white, Baroque-style theatre seems to be only one story high. Due to its large, bright windows, coquettish decorations and lavishly ornate dome the building soon conquered the hearts of the theatre-goers. Vígszínház became the most popular theatre venue in the early years of the 19th century. Its glory was partly due to its colourful repertory, which also included operettas, but, first and foremost, it became famous for the great acting quality of its troupe. (English)
