Built 1825-1825 as Landestheater by Peter von Nobile, replacing a previous theatre on the same site (built 1776, destroyed by fire in 1823). Opened 4 October 1825. 1887 renamed Stadtheater. 1200 seats. 1889 renamed Theater am Franzensplatz after the new Stadttheater had been opened. 1959-1960 partly demolished. Subsequently rebuilt, with the auditorium restored to its original form. Re-opened 14 March 1964 as Schauspielhaus. Used for dama performances by the resident company. Also used for performances during the Steirischer Herbst festival. Current capacity: main auditorium: 564 seats, rehearsal stage: 100 seats. (English)
