Built 1953-1955 by Gerhard Weber, incorporating the surviving stage tracts of the former Hamburgische Staatsoper (Stadttheater) [built 1827, destroyed in World War II]. 1.690 seats. Opened 15 Oct 1955 with Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Used by the resident municipal opera and ballet ensembles. (English)
