Opened 1678 as Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo with Carlo Pallavicino's opera Vespasiano. 1797 renamed Teatro Civico. 1834 restorations, renamed Teatro Emeronitto. 1837 renamed Teatro Malibran in honour of the Spanish opera singer, María Malibrán (1808-1836). 1992 restorations and additions. Since 2001, used for opera performances by the Teatro La Fenice opera company. (English)
