Built 1913 by Kirchoff & Rose for Martin Beck's Orpheum circuit. Opened 24 Mar 1913. Later operated by the Keith-Albee circuit. Used for vaudeville shows. 1930-1957 also used as a cinema, 1957-1965 exclusively used as a cinema. 1965 purchased by the Nederlanders Organization. Rebuiling and re-conversion to a theatre proper by Ralph Alswang. Ca. 1988 major exterior rebuilding, incorporating the theatre in the new skyscraper Embassy Suites Hotel; auditorium rebuilding by Fox & Fowle. Used for musical performances, e. g. J. Herman's La Cage aux Folles (1761 performances), Cy Coleman's The Will Rogers Follies (981 performances), or Elton John's Aida. 1736 seats. (English)
