Statements
Built 1898 by Oswald Cane Wylson and Charles Long. Opened 26 Dec 1898 as Empress Theatre. 1260 seats. Later renamed Empress Theatre of Varieties and Empress Music Hall. 1931 rebuilding by Andrew Mather. Re-opened Sep 1931 as New Empress Theatre. Closed 12 Jan 1957. Converted into a cinema by David E. Nye and F. Mudd. Re-opened 5 Feb 1957 as Granada Theatre. Closed 10 Feb 1967. Later used as a bingo hall. Demolished Nov 1992 in favour of a housing block. (English)
