Built 1908 by William H. McElfatrick for Oscar Hammerstein. Opened 17 Nov 1908 as Philadelphia Opera House with George Bizet's opera Carmen. Over 4000 seats. 1910 sold to the New York Metropolitan Opera, re-opened as Metropolitan Opera House. Used by the Metropolitan Opera and various other opera companies. From 1920, also used as a cinema. Closed 1934. Later used as a cinema, then a ballroom, a sports venue, mechanic training center and a church. Unused from 1988 to 1995, then again used as a church. 2017-2018 renovations. Re-opened 3 Dec 2018 as The Met with a concert by Bob Dylan. Used as a concert venue. (English)
