Built 1962-1964 by Welton Becket. Opened 6 Dec 1964 with a concert by Jascha Heifetz and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (conductor: Zubin Mehta). Named in honour of the president of the Symphony Association and chairwoman of the Music Center Building Fund Committee, Dorothy Buffum Chandler (1901-1997). Operated as part of the Los Angeles Music Center. Home to the LA Opera company. Until 2003, also home to the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. 1969-1987 venue of the Academy Awards (Oscar) ceremonies. 3197 seats. (English)
