Built 1952 by converting a military office block of 1904 (the former Marine-Intendantur). Opened 19 Oct 1952 with Shakespeare's Hamlet. 1983 renovations. Further renovations and alterations in the 2000s. Originally ca. 800 seats, currently 514 seats. - Home to the Landesbühne Niedersachsen Nord drama company. Also used for guest performances by the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater company. Until 2010, also used for performances in Low German by the Niederdeutschen Bühne Rüstringen (from 2003 as Theater am Meer). (English)
