Built 1960-1963 by Ralph Rapson. Stage area design by Tanya Moiseiwitsch. Opened 7 May 1963 with Shakespeare's Hamlet, directed by the theater's founder, Sir Tyrone Guthrie (1900-1971). In the late 1960s, extension by rehearsal stage, a set shop, and administrative offices, and integration of Guthrie Theater and Walker Art Center with a single entrance and a common lobby. 1993 renovations and modernization. Originally 1441 seats, now 1298 seats. Used by the resident drama company. (English)
