Opened 21 October 1897 by a French opera company. 1962 restorations. From 1991 structural repairs after earthquakes in 1990 and 1991. Home to the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional and the Compañía Nacional de Danza. Used for opera, ballet, and drama performances and for classical concerts. (English)

Architect Charles Thirion from Verviers involved in construction. The DGOP was directed, in different periods, by the engineers Nicolás Chavarría, Luis Matamoros, Leon Tessier and Ángel Miguel Velázquez. The architects Guillermo Reitz and Augusto Fla-Chebba and the engineers Tessier and Enrico Invernizio carried out the technical aspects during different phases of the construction. Reitz, the young architect who designed the National Theatre, was trained professionally in Germany. The interior distribution was defined by Chavarría, modeled after French-style theaters in accordance with the theories of the French architects and treatise writers Hippolyte Meynadier, Charles Garnier and Alphonse Gosset.
