Built 1927 by Arthur Burnett Benton and William J. Dodd as Mission Play Theatre for John Steven McGroaty to house his historical drama Mission Play (played there until 1932). From 1932 used as a cinema. 1945 purchased by the city of San Gabriel. Re-opened as a performing arts center named San Gabriel Civic Auditorium. 1971 installation of the Wurlitzer theatre organ from the E. F. Albee Theatre in Brooklyn, New York City. Severely damaged by an earthquake in 1987. Repaired and reopened 12 Feb 1988. 2008 renamed San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. (English)
