Built 1798-1799 by Szczepan Humbert. 1841-1842 major renovation and enlargement (900 seats) by Karol Kremer and Tomasz Majewski. 1878 rebuildings. Closed 31 August 1893. Until 1906 converted into a first floor concert hall with ground floor ballrooms by Tadeusz Stryjeński and Franciszek Mączyński, with art-deco façade decoration by Józef Gardecki. 1943-1944 renovation by Bronisław Opaliński and Marcin Bukowski. Concert hall converted into a theatre during the German occupation in World War II. Later various rebuildings. Renamed Stary Teatr im. Heleny Modrzejewskiej [Helena Modrzejewska Old Theatre] in honour of the Polish-American actress, Helena Modrzejewska (also known as Helena Modjeska, 1840-1909). (English)
