Built 1851-1857 as Teatro Municipale by Cesare Coste for the city of Reggio Emilia. Opened April 1857 with Achille Peri's opera Victor Pisani. Main curtain by Alfonso Chierici, intermission curtain by Giovanni Fontanesi. The theatre still contains a complete set of 19th century old stage machinery. Renamed 1980 in honour of the Italian actor, Romolo Valli (1925-1980). Used for opera and drama performances, ballet performances (especially by the Aterballetto company), and concerts. 1088 seats.
