Built 1911 as New Prince's Theatre by Bertie Crewe. Opened 26 Dec 1911 with the play The Three Musketeers. 1914 renamed Princes Theatre. Used for opera seasons by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1921, 1942, 1956, 1958, and 1960. Also used for ballet performances. 1963 renamed Shaftesbury Theatre. 1968-1973 location of almost 2000 performances of the musical, Hair. 1973 in danger of demolition after a ceiling fall. Saved after public support by the Save London's Theatres Campagin and others. 1974 reopened after repair works. 1980, 1988-1993, and 1997 roof alterations and minor interior alterations by Dowton and Hurst. 1404 seats (+ 28 standing). - [Note: The Shaftesbury Theatre operating between 1888 and 1941 is another building that was located at 126 Shaftesbury Avenue.] (English)
