Law courts and performance halls complex, built 1842-1854 by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes (exterior) and Charles Robert Cockerell (interior), on the former site of an infirmary. Major refurbishment in the 1990s/2000s. - Great Hall: 1855 organ by Henry Willis (7737 pipes). Floor by Minton, made from ca. 30,000 encaustic tiles. Originally used for large-scale music festivals and balls. Later used for concerts and congresses. Up to 1000 seats. Concert Room: Used for concerts. Up to 1200 seats. Closed due to safety concerns. (Planned use: concert hall). Crown Court: Used as criminal court until 1980. (Planned use: tourist attraction with mock trials; theatre for court drama performances).
