Built 1905 as Waldorf Theatre by W. G. R. Sprague for Seymour Hicks and Charles Frohmann, as one of a pair of a similar, though not identical theatres to each side of the not yet built Waldorf Hotel (the other being the Aldwych Theatre). Opened 22 May 1905. 1909 renamed Strand Theatre, 1911 renamed Whitney Theatre, 1913 re-renamed Strand Theatre. 2005 renamed Novello Theatre in honour of the Welsh entertainer, Ivor Novello (1891-1951), who lived in an apartment within the theatre building from 1913 to 1951.
