Built 1956-1959 by Werner Ruhnau. Original decoration with sculptures by Norbert Kricke, Jean Tinguely, Robert Adams, Paul Dierkes and monochrome sponge reliefs by Yves Klein. Opened 15 Dec 1959 as Städtische Bühnen. Later renamed Musiktheater im Revier (Music Theatre in the [Ruhr] Coal-Mining District). The complex includes the main theatre (Großes Haus with 1004 seats) and a smaller theatre (Kleines Haus). Used for opera, ballet and musical performances by the resident ensembles as well as for concerts. (English)
